Emily Borghese: 1 year PQE at Lux Family Law

I celebrated my one-year qualification anniversary on 30 January 2024 and have been reflecting on what the last year (and first year post qualification) has been like with Lux.

My qualification was marked with our Director, Charlotte Leyshon, taking me for a celebratory meal at Heston Blumenthal’s 3 Michelin star restaurant, The Fat Duck in Bray. The Sensorium tasting menu was outstanding and really did set the tone for the year!

During my training contract and subsequently post-qualification, I assisted our Principal Director, Charlotte Leyshon, on the reported case of Traharne v Limb [2022] EWFC 27. Lux were instructed by the respondent husband in the High Court financial remedy trial relating to a post-nuptial agreement. The 4-day trial was heard by Sir Jonathan Cohen in the Family Court sitting at the Royal Court of Justice. Mr Richard Bates of 29 Bedford Row acted for Lux’s client and successfully argued the case on his behalf. As part of his judgment, Sir Cohen provided clear guidance on how coercive and controlling behaviour in financial remedy cases should be treated alongside providing robust observations surrounding costs. Charlotte’s summary of the case can be found here: Lux Family Law acts for the respondent husband in reported case: Traharne v Limb [2022] EWFC 27 (31 March 2022) – Lux

In light of the considerable hard work involved in the running of this case, Lux were nominated for Case of the Year 2023 at the prestigious LexisNexis Family Law Awards held in London. Charlotte and I attended the awards ceremony held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge. We shared a table with 29 Bedford Row and Family Law in Partnership (our fellow nominees for Case of the Year).

In view of Lux’s performance in the previous financial year, the Lux team were also treated to a corporate box at the Principality Stadium to watch Beyonce’s Renaissance tour. This was incredible and, being a huge Beyonce fan, was a dream come true.

I was also fortunate enough to receive some of my own personal accolades in my first of year of qualification, including being recognised as a recommended lawyer in the Legal 500 2024 directory despite having qualified in only January 2023. I was thrilled to learn that I had been named and described as “‘an up-and-coming family law talent’ in spite of her relatively junior status.”.  I was also shortlisted for Rising Star of the Year at the Cardiff & District Law Society Awards 2023.

I am excited to continue expanding my expertise as a family solicitor with Lux and I can’t wait to see what year 2 holds for me!
